With the new Limited Edition Masterpiece 8X8, Steinway & Sons pays tribute to the beauty of the Earth and its treasures. A Steinway is composed of 80% wood — conscientiously crafted, yet most often concealed beneath the elegant high-gloss polished black surface. For this reason, Steinway & Sons regularly introduces precious grand pianos and upright pianos that are distinguished by the use of exceptional veneers and represent singular examples of the art of craftsmanship. They are a feast for the eyes and a masterpiece of sound in equal measure.

Maple Burl, American Walnut, Oak, Eucalyptus, Macore Burl, Makassar Ebony, Olive, Santos Rosewood — each name more euphonious than the last, perhaps more or less familiar, originating from different regions of the Earth, in varied colors and grain patterns. Something for every lover of nature.
Complementary Accents
For the light to medium-dark woods, chrome hardware was selected, and the cast plate likewise captivates with its elegant silver tone. The MASTERPIECE logo is adorned with a metallic-gray Tahitian pearl.
American Walnut, Makassar Ebony — the darker character of these woods is brought to particularly striking effect by warm rose-gold design elements. Both the South Sea pearl in the logo and the numbered plaque that each Masterpiece bears integrate seamlessly into this concept.

The number 8 symbolizes great fortune, and for this reason only 8 grand pianos of each wood variety are produced, handcrafted with passion and respect for nature at the Steinway factory in Hamburg.

The entire collection thus comprises 64 upright pianos, handcrafted in the Steinway factory — each one more beautiful and individual than the last. A writing instrument as individual as the piano
Every Masterpiece 8X8 is accompanied by a premium writing instrument designed exclusively for Steinway & Sons by Hamburg designer Jan Zander. Individually handcrafted by him from the original solid woods of the collection, the design mirrors the look of the instruments and underscores once more the passion and attention to detail that goes into them. The design of the clip, for instance, references a Steinway patent from the year 1880, drawing on the form of the screws of the pressing device developed at that time — the very device still used today to bend the grand piano rim.
